Main weather observations(recorded during past 24 hours)

As per yesterday's maximum temperatures, Heat wave conditions are prevailing over isolated pockets of interior Orissa, Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh. Minimum temperatures rose by 2-3°C over some parts of Assam and Bihar and at isolated pockets of northwest Rajasthan, interior Maharashtra, interior Karnataka, north Andhra Pradesh, south Chhattisgarh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram; fell by 2-4°C over some parts of south Rajasthan, north Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal and at isolated pockets of interior Tamilnadu, north Orissa, east Uttar Pradesh and changed a little elsewhere. They are above normal by 2-4°C over some parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Tamilnadu and over isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, north Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, south Chhattisgarh, Marathawada, Rayalaseema, north interior Karnataka, coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Bihar; below normal by 2-3°C over isolated pockets of south Rajasthan, Madhya Maharashtra, Gangetic West Bengal and west Madhya Pradesh and near normal over rest parts of the country.

Rainfall has occurred at most places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands; at many places over Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal; at a few places over Meghalaya and at one or two places over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, south Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Kerala, Tamilnadu, Sikkim, south Assam and Tripura. Weather remained mainly dry over rest parts of the country.

The chief amounts of rainfall (in cm) recorded at 0830 hours IST of yesterday is Long Island, Hut Bay, Maya Bandar, Burdwan and Salem-3 each, Port Blair, Carnicobar, Silchar and Ajmer-2 and Kailasahar, Kolkata(Dum Dum), Shantiniketan, Bankura, Jamshedpur, Baripada-1each.

Kalpana-1 Cloud imagery at 0830 hours IST shows convective clouds over some parts of Tripura, Andaman sea, east central & southeast Bay of Bengal and south Arabian Sea. Low/medium clouds are seen over parts of western Himalayan region, Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal & Sikkim and remaining Northeast and south peninsular India.
Major features of weather forecast (upto 0830 hours IST of 22nd May 2012)
- Rain/thundershowers would occur at one or two places over Jammu & Kashmir during next 24 hours and increase thereafter.
- Rain/thundershowers would occur at one or two places over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
- Dust storms/thunderstorms would occur at one or two places over plains of northwest India.
- Rain/thundershowers would occur at a few places over northeastern states.
- Rain/thundershowers would occur at one or two places over Chhattisgarh and east India.
- Rain/thundershowers would occur at one or two places over south peninsular India and Lakshadweep.
- Rain/thundershowers would occur at many places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
- Weather would be mainly dry over remaining parts of the country.
- No significant change in maximum temperatures over northwest and adjoining central India.
- Latest available satellite picture (Fig.1)
indicates the current cloud condition across Indian region.
- The climate outlook for the period of seven days i.e. 19th May to 26th May 2012 (Fig.2) shows that rain/thundershowers would occur a few places over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, northeastern states, Chhattisgarh, over south peninsular India, Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Weather Warning :-
- Thunder squalls with wind speed reaching 7080 kmph would occur at one or two places over Orissa during next 48 hours.
- Thunder squalls with wind speed reaching 5060 kmph would occur at one or two places over Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Tripura during next 48 hours.
Agricultural activities :-
Dry weather (Heat wave like conditions) prevailed in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra state during past few days. The maximum temperature ranged between 40.6°C to 42.6°C and the minimum temperature varied from 27.8°C to 29.4°C. Summer ploughing operations in current fallow fields, need based irrigation/plant protection to summer crops and vegetables. Basin mulching in fruit/tree crops and thatches are being provided for young growing fruit plantation, maintenance work of farm pond , contour layout in fields, preparatory tillage / cleaning campaign of harvested field is being carried out. Wherever irrigation is available, pre-monsoon cotton sowing and nursery sowing of vegetables and composting in pits at farm level are in progress. No major pests/diseases were noticed.
